Rate dependent spectral reduction for voiceless fricatives
نویسنده
چکیده
The relationship between local speaking rate and spectral reduction of voiceless fricatives is examined based on a corpus of spontaneous speech. The spectral balance of about 18k items is statistically analyzed with regard to consonant duration and local speaking rate. Both measures show comparable effects: For most of the treated allophones, significant within-speaker reduction occurs with higher rates. The speaking style of the material is constant and stress, part of speech, and position in the syllable was controlled. However, as the observed effects are small compared to differences between allophones, perceptional relevance is considered to be implausible.

The Effect of Spectral Estimator on Common Spectral Measures for Sibilant Fricatives
Recently, speech researchers have begun to base spectral analyses of sibilant fricatives on modern spectral estimators that promise reduced error in the estimation of the spectrum of the acoustic waveform. In this paper we look at the effect that the choice of spectral estimator has on the estimation of spectral properties of English voiceless sibilant fricatives.
متن کاملAcoustic structure of fricative consonants in Greek
The present study examines the temporal and spectral characteristics of Greek fricatives (duration and spectral moments, i.e. mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis) as distinctive cues for their place of articulation. The effects of voicing, speaker’s gender and post-fricative vowel on both duration and spectral moments are also investigated. The results indicate that noise duration does not disti...
متن کاملEffects of Two Linguistically Proximal Varieties on the Spectral and Coarticulatory Properties of Fricatives: Evidence from Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek
Several studies have explored the acoustic structure of fricatives, yet there has been very little acoustic research on the effects of dialects on the production of fricatives. This article investigates the effects of two linguistically proximal Modern Greek dialects, Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek on the temporal, spectral, and coarticulatory properties of fricatives and aims to determine th...
متن کاملSpeaking under Cover: The Effect of Face-concealing Garments on Spectral Properties of Fricatives
This paper firstly reports on the design of an audiovisual ‘face cover’ corpus. High-quality audio and video recordings were taken of 10 speakers reading phonetically-controlled stimuli under various face disguise conditions. Possible articulatory, acoustic and perceptual effects of the masks in a forensic context are introduced. Secondly, preliminary results of a spectral analysis of voiceless...
متن کاملPharyngeal articulation in the production of voiced and voiceless fricatives.
A structural magnetic resonance imaging study has revealed that pharyngeal articulation varies considerably with voicing during the production of English fricatives. In a study of four speakers of American English, pharyngeal volume was generally found to be greater during the production of sustained voiced fricatives, compared to voiceless equivalents. Though pharyngeal expansion is expected f...
